The Paris Olympic Games showcased a commitment to sustainability by restricting the construction of new infrastructures. This approach put a spotlight on innovative materials that blend aesthetics with environmental responsibility. Serge Ferrari played a crucial role by providing advanced, flexible composite fabrics made from recycled fibers, ensuring both high performance and a reduced environmental footprint.
Serge Ferrari has been the official supplier of flexible composite fabrics for the Olympic Games since the tournament in Sydney in 2000 and its canvases will also again cover the Philippe-Chatrier court at Roland-Garros where the tennis events are played. The company’s materials are already present in the retractable roof of the Roland Garros stadium which was installed in 2022.
The Philippe-Chatrier court at Roland-Garros uses the Flexlight Xtrem TX30 membrane, a material that combines a highly durable coating with a PVDF crosslinked surface treatment. This advanced formulation, typically reserved for rigid materials, was chosen for its superior resistance to weather-induced oxidation and erosion.
Another key requirement was to maintain natural lighting when the roof is closed, providing optimal visibility and comfort for both players and spectators. Consistent lighting also ensures better quality for television broadcasts.
Flexible composite materials like this membrane offer significant advantages due to their lightweight and adaptable properties. This reduced weight supports the unique architectural design and allows for more complex shapes. The incorporation of this membrane decreases the overall weight of the retractable roof, making it possible to open and close the structure quickly.
The membrane's exceptional durability against weathering will maintain its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal for many years. Its development underwent a rigorous validation process, supported by leading experts in polymer aging.
